Blame the sore neck on Germany-Spain June 30, 2008

I woke up this morning with the worst sore neck ever. I kept trying to remember if I’d slept funny, and then it hit me…

It must have been the two-plus hours of cranking my neck to watch the European Soccer Championship final match between Germany and Spain in a super-crowded pub. My guys lost, 1-0.

J was working yesterday, and I met friends Lewis and Hallie at Brit’s on Nicollet Mall. We were packed in there like sardines (literally S.R.O.) and for some reason, all the tall guys in the joint decided to stand right in front of us for most of the second half. Ouch.

Was it worth it? Yes. Nothing beats the atmosphere of watching the games along with hundreds of spirited, knowledgeable international soccer fans. We saw fans in Brit’s wearing jerseys from everywhere—even a Harry Kewell Australia jersey.

Harry Kewell

Maybe the sore neck wouldn’t feel quite so bad if Germany had won (or my other favorite team, Holland, which lost in the quarters)… Oh well. The road to South Africa  (2010 World Cup) begins in September!

And you thought this was going to be a mommy-blog?? Kidding… I will post belly shots when the bump starts to show.

And the second trimester begins… June 26, 2008

Like a giddy school girl, I’ve been blabbing to almost anyone who will listen: We’re expecting a tiny little miracle in December!

I FINALLY found time to make a few calls and bang out a some emails sharing the news late last week. I defended my thesis June 18 (Woot!), which means the gray matter between my ears can handle important matters other than “school-work-school-school-work-finish thesis-OMG-finish thesis-statistical crap-HATE stats-OMG-finish thesis!” for the first time in nearly two years.

I now get a headache just thinking about my thesis: “The Beckham Effect: Exploring the Limits of Match-Up Hypothesis to Examine a Soccer Superstar’s Range of Endorsement Capabilities.” I love international soccer and am interested in celebrity endorsements, so it turned out to be a fun but complex undertaking. No, I did not get to meet David Beckham in the process.

As much as I’m now basking in the wonder of expecting our first child, I’m still waiting to start feeling better. I continue to do battle with nausea/morning sickness. It comes and goes regardless of the time of day, of course.

The second trimester “officially” began June 25 (depending on what books you consult), as I completed Week 13.  So, I’m not giving up hope just yet. Better days may be ahead.

I’ve picked up some great tips from friends and family members who’ve been there, done that. Small meals every 3-4 hours is key. Potato chips and lemonade? Check. Cheese and crackers? Yep. In fact, Ak Mak whole wheat crackers with low-moisture part-skim string cheese is my new favorite snack. Remember ginger ale (which I don’t think I’d tasted since taking swipes from my parents’ “party mixers” back in the early 80s)? It’s both soothing and refreshing. Yum.

I’m touched by how caring our friends and family members have been. They share advice if I ask, are super-supportive, and most of all, they don’t seem to mind our unending “gushing” about becoming parents. I’m sure J and I are going on and on as if we’re the first couple to expect a baby. We’re just genuinely giddy…

Thanks for letting us gush, all!
